New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) Appealing for restraint, the RSS today said the Allahabad High Court verdict on Ayodhya title suit should not been seen as anybody”s victory or defeat and sought people”s support for construction of a Ram temple. “The judgement has paved the way for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The judgement is not a win or loss for anybody. We invite everybody, including Muslims, to help build the temple,” Sarsangchalak Mohan Bhagwat told reporters.

“The court verdict should not be seen as anybody”s victory or defeat,” he reiterated. Bhagwat also said the joy and happiness over the verdict should find expression in a “controlled and peaceful manner” within the limits of law and constitution.

“Uncalled for provocation must be avoided,” he said adding, the movement for a Ram temple was “not a reactionary one nor it is against any particular community.” Bhagwat also appealed to the Muslims to “forget the past”.

Lucknow, Sep 12 (IANS) Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists in this Uttar Pradesh capital Sunday protested against actor Salman Khan for his remarks on the 26/11 terror attack, police said. Salman has apologised for his comments.

Shouting slogans against Salman, BJP activists burnt posters of the actor near a mall-cum-multiplex in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar area.

Police used mild force against the protesters as they tried to disrupt a show of film ‘Dabangg’ that has Salman in the lead.

‘Timely intervention by our teams managed to control the situation and disperse the protesters, who even tried to disrupt vehicular traffic in the busy area,’ police Inspector Akshay Kumar told reporters here.

In the wake of the protest, security has been strengthened at malls, multiplexes and cinema halls, particularly those screening ‘Dabangg’.

The star stoked a row with his remark that the 26/11 attack attracted ‘too much hype’ as only ‘elite people were targetted’.

‘The interview has been twisted. I saw it myself, the way it is coming across on TV, it is sounding insensitive. I was just saying life is equal for both rich and poor, some attacks get more media coverage and some don’t. Why is that? Every human life is important,’ Salman, 44, told Aaj Tak news channel.

‘Any attack or terrorist attack in the world is unpardonable. A terrorist has no nationality, no religion and no guts. I have complete faith in our intelligence agencies. I’ve always had faith in our police and armed forces. I did not want to hurt anybody’s sentiments and if I have hurt anybody’s sentiments then I am really, really sorry,’ he added.

Mumbai, Sep 10 (IANS) With the 10-day Ganesh festival starting Saturday, police have gone on high alert as two suspected terrorists have entered Mumbai with a view to creating disturbances during the festive season.

Joint Police Commissioner Himanshu Roy told reporters that intelligence reports received by the police and state home department said the pair — said to be a Bangladeshi and a Pakistani — entered Mumbai sometime ago. They are Kalimuddin Khan Alias Rameshwar Pandit, 28, and Hafiz Sharif, 25.

Roy said the police and the crime branch have set up special teams and have sought the help of the public to nab the pair, whose sketches have also been released.

He said they may create disruptions during the festive season in crowded places, especially at religious gatherings.

Though he did not go into specifics, Roy was clearly hinting at the hundreds of Ganesh pandals which have been erected all over Mumbai and where millions of worshippers throng at all hours of the day.

The Ganesh festival, preparations for which have begun in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on a grand scale, attracts hundreds of thousands of domestic and foreign tourists.

He urged Mumbaikars to provide any information on the duo to the nearest police station, or the control room No. 100 or on special helpline numbers 022-22633333/022-22625020.

Meanwhile, in view of the developments, police have heightened security checks all over Mumbai and surrounding districts of Thane and Raigad. Some roads have also been blocked.

The development comes barely a couple of days after the Anti-Terrorist Squad nabbed two people in connection with the Feb 13 terror blast at Pune’s German Bakery on the eve of Valentines Day.

Grapevine is abuzz that the former Miss Universe has recently broken up with former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram, but she refused to address the rumours.

Sushmita, 34, kept mum on the whole issue saying, “It”s all rubbish and I don”t want to talk about it.” However the single mother, who raises two adopted daughters, said that she would definitely tie the knot in the future.

Sumir Kaul Srinagar, Aug 23 (PTI) Fed up with repeated strikes by separatists in Kashmir Valley, shopkeepers are up in arms against protestors, who are tasting their own bitter pill as locals are attacking them with stones. Clerics have also started making fervent appeals from mosques to open shops and restore normalcy in violence affected areas.

An incident of clash was recently reported from Peerbagh in Budgham district of Central Kashmir – the scene of violent protests during the last few weeks. As separatists and their goons reached the area to enforce the strike, they were greeted with stones.

Local shopowners showered stones on these rowdy elements who tried to force them to close down their establishments. The police could not do anything to quell the locals and shopkeepers as securitymen were outnumbered.

These shopkeepers and locals reached the police station later and filed an FIR against 10 people of neighbouring Nabir Gund village holding them responsible for spoiling peace and threatening the locals. Far away in Anantnag in South Kashmir, an appeal for opening of shops was made as people were facing lot of hardships on account of frequent strikes during the Holy month of Ramzan.

The separatists” strike calls have hit the economy and at many a places people have been seen selling off their belongings at distress rates. The business of shopkeepers has suffered a lot as the turmoil not only brought tourism to an abrupt halt but also forced establishments to remain closed for nearly two months now.

In Ompura area in central Kashmir, there have been instances of exchange of hot words between locals and anti-social elements when businessmen were forced to shut down their shops. In Meehama Pulwama in South Kashmir, four men were beaten up by locals three days back when they were trying to enforce a strike in the area.

Senior police officials said people were voicing their concern and police was only intervening to prevent situation from turning worse. These issues are not limited to villages only.

In Natipora area of the city, anti-social elements ransacked a bakery shop. The owner”s only fault was to supply fresh traditional Kashmiri bread in his area.

The incident triggered resentment among the public against the separatist agenda. “It is heartening that people have started coming out to register their protest against the separatists though such protests are scattered,” said a senior police official.

Mumbai, Aug 13 (IANS) Aamir Khan’s Midas touch continues with his production venture ‘Peepli Live’, a non commercial film about farmer suicides, doing well on its opening day, taking the actor pleasantly by surprise, and raking up about Rs.70 million and still counting.

‘Initially, we had planned to open with 200 screens. But the reaction to the promos and trailers has been most encouraging. We are trying to react to the perceived demand to the film,’ said Aamir in a statement.

Journalist-turned-director Anusha Rizvi’s direcotrial debut, ‘Peepli Live’ was made on a budget of approximately Rs.100 million (including marketing costs) and recovered its investment even before its release by selling its satellite rights for Rs.100 million and music rights for Rs.40 million.

”Peepli Live’ has opened extremely well. What is surprising is the reaction from single screens – it opened to almost 90 to 95 percent in single screens,’ said a source close to Aamir.

‘As a non-star cast film with A-certificate, trade expected the film to do modest business. However, the film has done bigger business than small films by three times,’ added the source.

The cast of the film didn’t have any big names except Naseeruddin Shah. Many actors are tribals from Bhadwai village in Madhya Pradesh, while other cast members are from late playwright Habib Tanvir’s theatre troupe Naya Theatre, including the main lead Omkar Das Manikpuri, who plays Natha.

Other names in the cast are Malaika Shenoy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shalini Vatsa, Farrukh Jaffer, Vishal O. Sharma, Aamir Bashir, Sitaram Panchal and Yugal Kishore.

‘Peepli Live’ had the widest film release ever for a non star cast Hindi film. It hit 600 screens in India and 100 in overseas markets, except Britain Friday.

This is the fourth film from Aamir Khan Productions Ltd. after ‘Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India’ (2001), ‘Taare Zameen Par’ (2007) and ‘Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na’ (2008).

New York, Jul 31 (PTI) America was abuzz today with what is being billed as the ”wedding of the century” with former first daughter Chelsea Clinton tying the knot with investment banker Marc Mezvinsky, after an intensively secret build-up. The star studded wedding will take place in Rhinebeck, a quaint rural retreat for the New York elite, amidst a news black out which has triggered a media frenzy with hundreds of scribes descending on the small town.

The bride, 30 met her would-be-husband as a teenager and her nuptials with Mezvinsky, 32, are set to take place at the grand Astor Courthouse, which has been declared a ”no-fly” zone, with hundreds of security personnel blocking all roads leading to the venue. The bride”s parents, former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, are already in Rhinebeck for the wedding which will have a guest list of 500, but sans President Barack Obama and the first family.

According to unconfirmed reports the guests include talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, Hollywood mogul Steven Speilberg and former British Prime Minister John Major. Obama won”t be there as he says that he wasn”t actually invited and that in any case, two Presidents would be “one too many” at the wedding.

But media reports do not rule out the possibility of the Obamas making a grand entry by keeping their participation a secret for security reasons. Estimates of the wedding cost, has been put between USD 3 to 5 million.

Bill Clinton meanwhile charmed the locals during a casual stroll through the town, saying that he was pleased with his daughter”s choice of life partner. “I like him (Mark) very much,” a smiling Clinton said “I really do.

I admire him. Hillary feels the same way.

” Casual in jeans and a black golf shirt, Clinton shook hands and greeted the crowd like he was back on the campaign trail, reported New York Daily News. His surprise appearance came before a private rehearsal dinner last night in a renovated stone barn, after months of secrecy over the wedding.

After weeks of speculation about everything from who designed the dress, to the cost of the wedding cake, the ceremony will finally take place at 5pm local time. The nuptials will reportedly include both Christian and Jewish traditions as Chelsea is a Methodist while her fiance is Jewish.

Nothing has been announced about whether Chelsea is converting to Judaism or other options.

Bangalore, July 29 (IANS) Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa Thursday announced a ban on export of iron ore from Karnataka , saying that it was the only way to stop illegal mining in the state.

He also clamped a ban on transport of iron to other states.

Yeddyurappa told reporters here that the ban will be in force till the completion of a state Lok Ayukta (ombudsman) probe into illegal mining in the last 10 years, between 2000 and 2010.

He had Wednesday banned issue of permits for transporting iron ore for exports.

The chief minister’s decision comes against the backdrop of a raging controversy in the state over illegal mining and export of iron ore.

Between 2000 and 2010, over 30 million tonnes of iron ore was illegally mined and exported from Karnataka, according to data provided by Yeddyurappa to the state assembly.

The Congress has dubbed it a ‘scam of the century’ involving up to Rs.600 billion (Rs.60,000 crore).

The Congress is on a march from Bangalore to iron ore rich Bellary, 320 kms away, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into illegal mining.

Bellary is the political base of Reddy brothers, powerful mine owners and ministers in Yeddyurappa’s cabinet.

The Congress began the march July 25 and will reach Bellary Aug 9 for a rally. The party leaders and workers are walking 20 kms a day to cover the 320 kms in 16 days.

Yeddyurappa has rejected handing over the probe to CBI saying it will only delay the findings and credibility of the agency is in doubt.

The Congress and the other opposition party in the state Janata Dal-Secular alleged that the Reddy brothers are involved in largescale illegal mining and export of iron ore.

The Reddys, Tourism Minister G. Janardhana, his elder brother Revenue Minister G. Karunakara and younger brother and assembly member G. Somashekara have denied the charges.

The brothers, who own the Obulapuram Mining Company, Thursday launched ‘swabhiman’ campaign in Bellary to counter what they called Congress and JD-S attempts to malign not only them but the district also.

Their loyalist, Health Minister B. Sriramulu Wednesday tonsured his head and announced he will walk barefoot and eat only fruits till Aug 26 when senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj is expected to visit Bellary.

The Reddy brothers and Sriramulu call Swaraj as their ‘thayi’ (mother). She had brokered a compromise in October-November last year when the Reddy brothers led a revolt against Yeddyurappa.

The Reddys became close to Swaraj when she contested the 1999 Lok Sabha election against Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Since then Swaraj has been visiting Bellary almost every year to perform ‘Varamahalakshmi pooja’ (worship of wealth goddess Lakshmi). The festival, a major one in Karnataka, this year falls on Aug 26.

Shah, sent to 14 days judical custody, has been lodged in the Sardar barracks, named after Sardar Patel, who was once confined there. The former minister of state for home has been permitted home-cooked food.

The other 15 accused in the case, including Deputy Inspector General of Police D.G.Vanzara and and Superintendents of Police Rajkumar Pandian and M.N. Dinesh, are lodged in a barrack adjoining the Sardar barracks.
Strict instructions have been given to the jail authorities to keep them segregated from Shah.

Shah, who made a dramatic appearance before the media at a press conference of the state BJP chief here before leaving for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) camp office in Gandhinagar to surrender, was given a ceremonial send off from the party office with an ‘arti’ and vermillion applied to his forehead.

As Shah, accompanied by BJP leaders, reached the CBI office, DIG P. Kandaswamy came racing outside, informed Shah of his arrest and requested him to accompany him. The former minister was whisked away to the residence of CBI judge A.Y. Dave, who sent him to judicial custody as the CBI did not seek his remand.

From Priyanka Tikoo New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) Days after Indo-Pak talks ended in sharp differences, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today broke his silence over the controversy surrounding Home Secretary G K Pillai”s remarks on ISI”s involvement in Mumbai attacks, describing their timing as “very unfortunate”. Clearly unhappy with Pillai”s statement a day ahead of his visit to Pakistan to hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart S M Qureshi, Krishna said if he was the Home Secretary, he would not have spoken about the revelations by Pakistani-American David Headley.

Factually, Pillai was “very much in order” in speaking about the disclosures made by Headley to FBI and Indian interrogators but “the timing was something which was very unfortunate,” Krishna told PTI in an interview here. His whole visit to Pakistan was “under-pinned” by the remarks by the Home Secretary and these had become a “factor” with Pakistan, he said, apparently meaning that the remarks had created a negative environment.

The Minister disclosed that he discussed Pillai”s comments with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh whom he had briefed on his parleys with Qureshi and other leaders. He insisted that the government was speaking in one voice on Pakistan and said he was “glad” that Home Ministry has now announced the appointment of a spokesperson.

In recent months, Pillai has been briefing the media. Disagreeing with the perception that his discussion with Qureshi had ended in a deadlock, Krishna said he was “quite satisfied” with his visit which has bridged the trust deficit “to some extent.

” Answering questions about Qureshi”s undiplomatic remarks after the talks and if he was willing to ignore such behaviour, Krishna said “I am willing to mind my business and concentrate on my work.” However, he dismissed as “ridiculous” the comparison sought to be drawn by Qureshi between JuD chief Hafiz Saeed”s anti-India statement and Pillai”s remarks on ISI. The Minister said the minute details of how the “whole conspiracy of 26/11 was hatched and executed” showed the “diabolical nature of the conspiracy”.

The fact that these details had come out during interrogation of Headley by FBI put much more onus on Pakistan to act against the conspirators, he said. .
